The oldest continuously operating bar in New York

Until it closed last year, this was the oldest continuously operating bar in New York—a particularly unlikely distinction given its location in the industrial wasteland of midtown’s far West Side. Under new ownership, and after a major physical overhaul, the improved space—featuring white tablecloths and rich mahogany walls—is now much more than just an antique watering hole for off-duty grease monkeys. Aussie chef Bryce Cole brings an unlikely Asian touch to high-end pub grub. The food gets points for creativity but occasional deductions for clumsiness: The sausage-encased Scotch eggs come, incongruously, with a salad dressed with sesame and soy. It’s slim pickings for food in this part of town, however, and if you’re looking for dinner near the Javits Center, you’re not going to do much better than Landmark’s seafood tapas plate, or the roasted duck, an enormous portion that includes a succulent breast and leg, served with mashed potatoes and a totally unnecessary heap of warm Asian slaw.

Irish tavern opened in 1868

Around since 1868, this “off-the-beaten-path” Hell's Kitchen tavern is deemed “worth the detour” for its “cozy olde NY” atmosphere alone; grab a pint and some “standard” pub grub delivered by a “caring” crew – “they don't make 'em like this anymore.”

experience an authentic British gastropub

Diners don't have to fly to the U.K. to experience an authentic British gastropub, but they do have to hike West to Eleventh Avenue. Open since 1868, the Landmark Tavern originally sat right on the Hudson River to better serve the neighborhood's dock workers. The restaurant's now a touch inland but still enjoys great water views and, since July 2005, the energy of new ownership. After years of neglect (and a temporary closing in 2004), the Landmark was taken over by Michael Young, owner of Druids, and his business partner Donnchadh O'Sullivan...

Landmark Tavern

...YUMMY! – Our group of 8, ages 12 to 68, went on the circleline cruise & walked to the tavern after. We had lunch and everyone's order was yummy. More than enough food portions, fish & chips had 2 BIG slabs of fish. Mash & bangers was tastey, red fish was very good, steak wrap had LOTS of steak. Although its a "tavern" the food was more than bar food. Manager was very friendly & helpful.

The service is top-notch

I kinda consider this my “local” pub, so my reviews may be heavily slanted from many nights walking out of there on a slant, but I keep coming back because I love it here.  This is an establishment where you get what you give – walk in, say hello, introduce yourself to your bartender (you may actually be meeting one of the very down-to-earth owners), and just relax.  You’re not in frenzied midtown anymore.

The food is top-notch.  Whether you’re in a salad mood, want to fill up on a delectable burger, or just want to graze on spectacular fries with a magnificent garlic dip, you cannot leave here hungry.  Personal fave: steak wrap (minus peppers, and ask for mushrooms).

Drinks – whatever your heart desires.  Magners – check.  Great Guinness pours – check.  Want a double vodka and club soda in a pint glass – check.  I’ve even seen them make Cosmos, although you have to ask yourself if you’re in the right establishment for that…really.

The ambience is unique.  Very old-fashioned feeling, dark wood and mellow lighting lend themselves to a tranquil evening feel.  You’ll get all kinds in here, from the ad agency next door to horse-drawn carriage drivers (who will leave a bit of an odor behind), and while I’ve seen a bunch of Pacha kids, I usually try to avoid nights when they’re coming by.

Private parties can be had in the back or upper rooms, and the service is top-notch for both.  Do also make the time to come for Irish folk music – it’s rather more unique than random cover bands other bars have, and who knows…you may enjoy yourself.

It’s worth the trek to 11th.  Just think of it this way – when you stumble out, you’re near all the cab depots, so you’ll rarely stand on the corner for long even at closing time.

I had the opportunity recently to go to the Landmark Tavern for a friend’s birthday celebration. What a GREAT job they did. The staff was fantastic and the whole feel of the place was wonderful. I would recommend it to anyone!
